Businesses Continue to Add Contract Workers

While jobs are being added at a slower rate than economists would like to see, they continue to be encouraged by the addition of more temporary jobs, according to www.ere.net’s recent article “Jobs Report Shows Economy Struggling to Gain Footing.

Citing the latest employment statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the article pointed out that while the United States added 83,000 private sector jobs, the gain was offset by the loss of the 225,000 temporary census jobs. And even though the unemployment rate fell from 9.7 to 9.5 percent, the article attributes that drop to the number of unemployed workers who have given up the search since the BLS only counts those actively looking for work.

However, the addition of 21,000 temporary/contract workers seems to indicate that things are improving enough for businesses to at least bring on more workers, even if they are not yet willing to commit to direct-hires. So here’s hoping that both direct and contract hiring continue to grow!
