The best way to find out what’s going on in the recruiting world is to get down in the trenches with recruiters… and that’s exactly what we aim to do with this series in the Top Echelon Recruiter Training Blog. And after we find out what’s going on the recruiting world, we’re going to share that information with you. One of the ways that recruiters become more successful is by learning from and sharing with other recruiters.
So… with that in mind, we’ve asked recruiters to share their thoughts about some specific topics in an attempt to better gauge the pulse of the industry—where it is right now and where it might be going in the future. Below are the thoughts of Matt Scheihing of J. Miles Personnel Services.
What’s one new recruiting strategy or technique that you implemented in 2010?
“Super-qualify everything because sometimes nothing is better than something. What I mean by that is instead of having the attitude of ‘I’ve never seen a JO I didn’t like,” I’m being more selective on who and what I work with. It’s paying off in time saved and focusing my effort in a productive direction.”
What’s the biggest obstacle on your desk right now, either with candidates or with clients?
“I’ve found that a big part of my job is to manage expectations of the client and candidate. The biggest obstacle is the misperception by clients that ‘the candidate pool is deep.’ In fact, the A-players my clients are interested in are still employed and when they do come on the market, these candidates have multiple options and are snapped up immediately.”
What are your thoughts on the recruiting industry overall and where it might be headed in the next 12 to 18 months?
“I’m bullish on the recruiting industry in the next 12-18 months. The war for talent has not really started yet, and the storm is looming. Due to the economic and political climate, we have Baby Boomers who should have already begun retiring, but put it off, and we have companies that have gotten lean—arguably the right thing to do—and are stockpiling cash on the sidelines. As soon as we see some certainty return to the U.S. and world economies, I predict a hiring and retiring frenzy, hence the war for talent.”
What are YOUR answers to these questions? Do you agree with what Matt has to say, or do your opinions differ? What did you experience in 2010, and what are your thoughts regarding 2011? Are better times on the horizon… or are there more tough times ahead? As always, we welcome your comments and feedback on the Top Echelon Recruiter Training Blog.
